Russia expands UAV industry amid rising NATO tensions

Russian UAV expert Samuel Bendett warned that Moscow is preparing for a large‑scale conflict with NATO, using the annual Dronnitsa exhibition in August to discuss tactics that would give UAVs a decisive edge. The event signals a concerted effort to develop technologies and operational concepts aimed at counter‑ing Western air defenses.

In response to Western sanctions, Russia has overhauled its military UAV sector, turning it into a “wartime economy” that integrates state defence firms, private companies and academic institutions. The government set 2030‑2035 development goals and launched a national UAV programme that has pushed annual production above 1.5 million units, with new factories such as the Alabuga complex in Tatarstan mass‑producing systems derived from Iran’s Shahed‑136 design. While production capacity has surged, analysts note that Russia still depends on foreign components for critical electronics and has not achieved full technological self‑sufficiency.
