Russia faces monthly deficit of 6,000 soldiers in Ukraine war
Western officials report that Russia is facing significant personnel shortages in the war against Ukraine, losing approximately 6,000 more soldiers per month than it can successfully recruit. While Moscow continues to bring in about 1,000 new recruits daily, this rate has failed to offset casualties over the last two months.
In response to these battlefield difficulties, Vladimir Putin has intensified missile strikes against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. Since early July, Russia has launched more than 360 missiles, specifically targeting energy systems to undermine Ukrainian morale ahead of the winter season.
Analysts warn that further mass mobilization poses high economic and political risks for the Kremlin. Following the 2022 mobilization, nearly one million Russians—many of them highly skilled professionals—fled the country, and fewer than half have returned. Additionally, there are concerns regarding the Russian military's ability to integrate new conscripts due to shortages in equipment and officer cadres.
