Russia faces renewed fuel shortages and rising gasoline prices
Russia is facing a renewed fuel crisis as of August 2026, characterized by significant gasoline shortages and rising prices. Authorities in at least ten regions, including Orenburg, Lipetsk, Tver, and Krasnodar, have tightened controls on fuel sales to manage the supply disruption.
The shortage is attributed to a combination of seasonal demand increases and refinery outages caused by drone attacks on energy infrastructure. While the situation had briefly stabilized in late July, a new wave of drone strikes has triggered further restrictions and supply difficulties.
To stabilize the domestic market, the Russian government has implemented an export ban on gasoline and diesel, lowered quality requirements, and sought imports. At least one shipment of gasoline from India has already reached the domestic market, and an Omani-flagged tanker recently discharged approximately 68,000 tons of gasoline at the Arctic port of Witino. Additionally, Moscow has restricted gasoline imports from Belarus and Kazakhstan to address the deficit.
