Russia forced recruitment reports surge amid mobilization fears
Reports of forced military recruitment in Russia are increasing, with human rights advocates warning of a surge in coercive tactics. The Russian human rights project Idite lesom reported a peak in such activities starting on 10 August, receiving 14 appeals in mid-August from individuals claiming they were detained and pressured into signing military contracts at police stations or enlistment offices.
Documented incidents span a wide geographic area, from Novorossiysk to Birobidzhan. Tactics reportedly include detaining men on the street under the guise of document checks or public intoxication, as well as targeting individuals at their workplaces. In the Penza region, similar incidents have been recorded since mid-June.
Recruitment efforts are also expanding into the penal system, with the Federal Penitentiary Service reportedly seeking contract soldiers within remand centers and colonies. Additionally, civilian recruiters are reportedly targeting vulnerable populations, such as the unemployed and those in significant debt, through job advertisements and personal contacts. Since the start of the invasion of Ukraine, Idite lesom has assisted over 80,000 people seeking to avoid military service.
