Russia: Forced military recruitment surges amid mobilization fears

Reports indicate a surge in forced military recruitment within Russia, as security forces reportedly detain civilians to pressure them into signing military contracts. The human rights project Idite lesom documented a peak in such activities starting around August 10, receiving 14 appeals from individuals who claim they were coerced into service at police stations or military enlistment offices.

Methods of recruitment include detaining men on the streets under the guise of document checks or public intoxication, as well as targeting individuals at their workplaces. The activity has been reported across various regions, from Novorossiysk to Birobidzhan and Penza.

Additionally, the Federal Penitentiary Service is reportedly using detention centers and penal colonies to find contract soldiers. Civilian recruiters are also reportedly targeting vulnerable populations, specifically those facing financial hardship, such as the unemployed or those in debt, through job advertisements and personal contacts.
