Russia intensifies aerial campaign against Ukraine amid NATO security concerns
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to evolve through both battlefield shifts and strategic aerial campaigns. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Russia threatens NATO territory, including Poland and the Baltic States, analysts note a lack of immediate indicators of an imminent conventional Russian war against NATO members. Such a move would face significant practical hurdles, as Russia is currently engaged in a war of attrition in Ukraine and lacks the manpower for a large-scale conventional conflict with the alliance.
On the battlefield, Ukraine has seen success with Operation Vivaldi, utilizing drone warfare to thwart Russian plans in the Donbas region. However, Russia has gained an advantage in the air war. The Kremlin is increasingly using a bombing campaign targeting civilian populations to disrupt daily life. This escalation is aided by the depletion of Ukraine’s Patriot air defense interceptors and the development of new, faster jet drones that are more difficult to intercept. Ukrainian engineers are currently working to develop countermeasures to address this growing aerial threat.
