Russia launches massive airstrikes across Ukraine targeting civilian infrastructure
Russia launched a massive series of coordinated airstrikes against Ukraine on August 20, targeting civilian infrastructure, energy hubs, and logistics centers. In Kyiv, the strikes killed at least 12 people and injured over 30. The attacks damaged residential buildings, a school, and a children's hospital. In response, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared August 21 an official day of mourning.
Beyond the capital, the strikes hit several regions. In Zaporizhzhia, at least one person was killed and several others injured as residential areas and infrastructure sustained damage. In the Chernihiv region, critical gas supply systems were targeted, while strikes in the Odesa region hit a border crossing toward Moldova.
Ukrainian air defenses reported intercepting 39 missiles and 145 drones during the large-scale assault. The Russian military utilized a combination of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and decoy drones to overwhelm defenses. Additionally, reports indicate increased activity in the Black Sea, including strikes on military supply vessels and fuel storage facilities in ports.
