Russia launches massive ballistic missile strike on Kyiv, killing one and wounding 16

In the early hours of 20 July, Russia fired a large salvo of ballistic missiles and attack drones at Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv. Ukrainian officials said more than 40 missiles of various types were launched, accompanied by about 120 drones. The barrage hit multiple districts, damaging residential blocks, a supermarket, a warehouse and a student dormitory. One civilian was killed and 16 were injured, with three people in serious condition.

Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down 18 of the 41 missiles and intercepting 108 of the 125 drones used in the attack, describing it as the biggest missile strike on Kyiv since the war began in 2022. President Volodymyr Zelensky urged allies to accelerate delivery of air‑defence systems, saying the city remains within reach of long‑range Russian weapons and the civilian toll is growing.

The assault underscores the ongoing pressure campaign by Russia on Kyiv, which, despite being far from the front lines, continues to face nightly sirens and emergency responses as the conflict enters its third year.
