Russia launches Yasen‑M class submarine Ulyanovsk

On 28 July, the Russian defence ministry announced that the new nuclear‑powered attack submarine Ulyanovsk, the latest unit of the Yasen‑M (Project 885M) class, was rolled out of the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk. The ceremony was led by Admiral Alexander Moiseyev, commander‑in‑chief of the Russian Navy.

Ulyanovsk, laid down on 28 July 2017, displaces about 8,600 tonnes on the surface and 13,800 tonnes when submerged, measures roughly 130 metres in length and is powered by a next‑generation KTP‑6 nuclear reactor that enables speeds over 31 knots and operational depths to 520 metres.

The submarine will undergo fitting‑out, dockside tests and sea trials, with full weapons and navigation system checks slated for completion by December 2027, after which it is expected to join Russia’s Northern Fleet for multipurpose missions including anti‑submarine warfare, surface ship attack and land‑target strikes.
