Germany and Russia escalate tensions through diplomatic closures

Diplomatic relations between Germany and Russia have escalated following a series of reciprocal closures of diplomatic and cultural institutions. The German government previously moved to close the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian House in Berlin, citing security concerns and a suspected Russian drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4, 2026.

In retaliation, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has ordered the closure of the German Consulate General in Saint Petersburg and the Goethe-Institut in Moscow, as well as its branches in Saint Petersburg and Novosibirsk. The German Consulate staff in Saint Petersburg has been given until September 18 to depart, while the Goethe-Institut in Moscow faces a deadline of September 13.

The German Foreign Ministry has criticized Russia's actions, describing them as a mistake that makes the return to constructive relations more difficult. Meanwhile, Russian authorities characterized their measures as a necessary response to Germany's unfriendly decisions.
