Russia pivots energy exports to Asia amid EU LNG phase-out

Russia is actively pivoting its energy export strategy toward Asia as the European Union implements a phased withdrawal from Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG). While EU imports of Russian gas have dropped significantly from previous highs, data indicates the EU purchased nearly 10 million tons of gas from the Yamal LNG project in the first half of 2026, an 18% increase over the previous year.

The EU has established a roadmap to end imports, with bans on short-term LNG contracts effective as of April 25, 2026, and long-term contracts set to be banned starting January 1, 2027. In response, Moscow is accelerating plans to develop the Northern Sea Route (NSR) into a major energy corridor.

To facilitate this, Russia is investing in icebreaking technology and specialized vessels to extend the shipping season along the 5,600 km Arctic route. Projects such as Arctic LNG 2 and Yamal LNG are central to this shift, aiming to reduce reliance on traditional routes like the Suez Canal and bypass Western-controlled maritime paths.
