EU Russian LNG surge, US reliance, bioenergy clash
Entities: France · Belgium · European Union · Yamal LNG · Russia
Overview
By late July 2026 the EU had purchased almost 10 million tonnes of Russian Yamal LNG – roughly €6 billion – to build inventories before the 1 January 2027 embargo, covering more than 97 % of the project's output. The front‑loading was driven by limited alternatives: a modest Algerian surplus, reduced Qatari capacity after Iranian strikes, and large U.S. (72 million tonnes) and Nigerian (14.8 million tonnes) shipments in 2025.
In the first half of 2026 the EU recorded a 9.89 million‑tonne import haul, a 16‑18 % rise on the prior year, led chiefly by France, Belgium and Spain. Hungary and Slovakia continued to receive pipeline gas via TurkStream under narrow exemptions, while overall gas storage sat at only 55 % of capacity – the lowest level for the season since 2021 – raising concerns ahead of the winter. Projections show imports could fall to about 6.3 million tonnes in July, intensifying price and supply risks.
EU regulations phased out short‑term Russian LNG contracts on 25 April 2026 and long‑term contracts on 1 January 2027; pipeline bans start 17 June 2026 (short‑term) and run to 30 September 2027 (long‑term). The shift is set to lift U.S. LNG to roughly two‑thirds of Europe’s imports, potentially rising toward 80 % by year‑end, prompting worries over geopolitical leverage.
At the same time, the EU Emissions Trading System still treats biomass‑fired power as zero‑carbon, accounting for about 15.7 % of ETS‑covered emissions. Critics argue that planned BECCS integration could spur further logging, offsetting claimed carbon removals. On 24 July 2026 the EU adopted its 21st sanctions package, targeting Russian energy‑related financial networks, the shadow tanker fleet, insurers, brokers and crypto‑finance, while freezing the automatic oil‑price‑cap adjustment until July 2027.
