Putin prepares 300‑500k troop mobilization, says Zelensky
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claims Russian President Vladimir Putin is planning a new mobilization of between 300,000 and 500,000 soldiers after the September parliamentary elections, likely to begin in early October. Zelensky warns the conscripts would be poorly trained, which could cause high Russian casualties.
Russian authorities have signed a decree expanding the armed forces to 2,426,130 personnel, including 1,535,000 soldiers. Ukrainian intelligence reports that Russia has lost 1,440,580 military personnel (killed, wounded, missing or captured) since the invasion began in February 2022. Recent Ukrainian estimates put current Russian losses at about 225,500 troops, including roughly 131,000 fatalities.
Russia is also reportedly seeking to augment its forces with an additional 30,000 soldiers from North Korea, with preparations for their reception underway in the Voronezh region.
