Russia may mobilize 300,000 troops following September elections, Zelenskyy claims
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has alleged that Russia is preparing to mobilize approximately 300,000 new troops later this year to compensate for significant battlefield losses. Zelenskyy claimed that Russia has lost 267,000 personnel since the beginning of the year, including roughly 155,000 killed.
According to Zelenskyy, the Kremlin likely intends to conduct this mobilization after the State Duma elections in September. To minimize domestic social unrest, the mobilization is expected to avoid major Russian cities, focusing instead on other regions.
Western intelligence officials have noted signs of preparation, including military exercises in the Kaliningrad exclave where officers oversaw readiness planning for housing, feeding, and arming local residents. Such exercises are reportedly being carried out in other Russian regions as well. If implemented, the new troops could be deployed to reinforce offensives in the Donetsk region or to create new threats along Ukraine's northern border.
