Russia pitches Su-57 and S-500 systems to India

Russia is intensifying its efforts to maintain its defense market dominance in India by proposing advanced military hardware, including the Su-57 stealth fighter and S-500 air defense systems. During the BRICS summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to discuss these proposals with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

To address India’s immediate combat-aircraft gap while its indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program develops, Moscow is offering the Su-57 with significant incentives. These include technology transfers, joint production of aircraft, and access to the Product 177S engine. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that technology transfer is a key part of the discussions.

In the air defense sector, Russia is promoting the S-500 as the successor to the S-400, which is already in service with the Indian Armed Forces. Moscow has also proposed the procurement of five additional S-400 systems. These offers come as India faces increasing regional competition from China’s J-20 stealth fighters and seeks to reduce its long-term reliance on foreign suppliers through domestic programs like Project Kusha.
