Russia reviews Trump's G20 summit invitation for Putin

The Kremlin has acknowledged a formal invitation from the United States government for President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit scheduled for December 2026 in Florida. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov stated that while the invitation was received with gratitude, discussing official attendance is “premature” as the request is currently undergoing institutional review.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, following meetings in New York with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, noted that the G20 provides a “new opportunity for both leaders to converse.” This potential meeting follows expectations for a possible bilateral encounter during the APEC forum in China in November 2026.

Simultaneously, the Trump administration is evaluating a new sanctions framework. This proposal includes the potential imposition of tariffs of up to 100% on hydrocarbon imports originating from Russia or processed through third countries. The White House has indicated that the G20 serves as a channel to negotiate a cessation of military operations in Ukraine, which remains a condition for easing financial controls on the Russian energy sector.
