Russia targets Ukraine grain exports via Black Sea strikes

Russia has implemented a new strategy targeting Ukraine’s grain exports, primarily through the Black Sea, to undermine the country's economy and impact global food supplies. Since July, a campaign of drone and missile strikes has targeted port infrastructure, warehouses, and storage facilities in regions such as Odesa, as well as the electrical grid in Kyiv.

This shift in tactics is described as more severe than the initial maritime blockades of 2022. Instead of relying solely on naval assets, Russia is utilizing maneuverable jet drones to strike critical economic arteries. This has effectively halted much of Ukraine's grain exports, which previously accounted for a significant portion of global wheat and corn supplies.

The disruption has turned the Black Sea into one of the most dangerous theaters for commercial shipping. Local officials warn that the inability to export crops is forcing farmers to sell harvests at drastically reduced prices to avoid total loss. This situation poses a risk of rising global food prices, as Ukraine previously supplied agricultural products to approximately 70 countries, feeding hundreds of millions of people.
