Russia to launch digital ruble on September 1, 2026
The Central Bank of Russia has announced that the digital ruble will transition from an experimental phase to full implementation starting September 1, 2026. This new digital currency will serve as a third form of national money, alongside cash and traditional bank deposits.
Twelve systemically important banks, which account for over 80% of the payment market, are prepared to offer digital ruble accounts and transaction services to customers. Unlike traditional deposits, digital rubles will be stored on the Central Bank of Russia's platform rather than in individual commercial bank accounts, with commercial banks acting as financial intermediaries.
The digital ruble is designed primarily as a means of payment rather than a savings instrument, and it will not be available for obtaining credit. Proponents suggest the system will offer zero commissions for individuals, increased transaction transparency to combat fraud and corruption, and a foundation for future operations with partner nations.
