Russia-Ukraine war drives ecological damage and geopolitical shifts

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues, the environmental and geopolitical consequences are intensifying. The war has resulted in significant ecological damage, with the term ‘ecocide’ gaining traction in European discourse. Estimates from the Initiative on GHG accounting of war suggest that conflict-related emissions reached 311 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent by February 2026, a figure comparable to France's annual emissions. This includes military fuel, munitions, fires, and infrastructure leaks, alongside projected emissions from future reconstruction.

Wildfires have also become a major issue, with 1.39 million hectares of natural landscapes burned in Ukraine in 2025.

On the geopolitical front, the prolonged conflict is testing European stability, particularly regarding energy dependency and economic pressures. While the European Union seeks to end its reliance on Russian energy, internal divisions are growing regarding military support for Kyiv and the economic impact of rearmament. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has indicated that Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have offered to mediate peace negotiations, a proposal reportedly welcomed by Vladimir Putin.
