Russia-Ukraine war escalates with North Korean involvement and drone strikes
Tensions in the Russia-Ukraine conflict have escalated following reports of North Korean involvement and drone strikes within Russian territory. Ukrainian drones targeted an industrial center in the Bashkiria region, specifically aiming at a large Gazprom refinery in Salavata, which resulted in a fire.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned of a significant Russian military mobilization following upcoming parliamentary elections in September. He characterized the elections as simulated and predicted that Russia plans to mobilize several hundred thousand additional troops by the end of the year. Furthermore, Kyiv has alerted international partners to the deployment of between 30,000 and 50,000 North Korean soldiers to Russia, alongside ballistic missiles and launchers.
On the diplomatic front, NATO condemned recent violations of airspace in Poland and Romania, expressing concern over Russia’s increasing tolerance for risk. The alliance reaffirmed its solidarity with the affected member states during a meeting of ambassadors.
