North Korea may deploy up to 50,000 troops to support Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that North Korea could deploy up to 50,000 soldiers to support Russia in its war against Ukraine. This follows an initial deployment of approximately 13,000 North Korean troops in late 2024.
Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) reports that roughly 8,500 North Korean soldiers remain on Russian territory, organized into four brigades. These units are currently focused on securing the border in the Kursk region rather than participating in active combat within occupied Ukrainian territories.
The initial deployment resulted in significant casualties. Ukrainian estimates suggest up to 3,000 North Korean soldiers were killed, while a BBC analysis of a North Korean memorial site estimated the death toll at approximately 2,300.
Despite early reports of poor equipment and lack of preparation for modern drone warfare, experts note that North Korean forces have since adapted their tactics. South Korean security experts emphasize that the conflict provides North Korea with valuable combat experience in modern warfare.
