Russia warns EU of more UAV incursions after drone hits Romanian apartment building

A drone, alleged to be Russian, crashed into a residential building in Romania on 29 May, injuring two people and sparking a fire. NATO accused Moscow of reckless behavior, while Romania reported the UAV violated its airspace, was tracked by radar and ultimately struck the apartment block.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said it was too early to determine the drone’s origin, noting similar incidents involving Ukrainian UAVs in Finland, Poland and the Baltic states, and called for more information from Romania. Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev warned European leaders that further UAV incursions should be expected, urging them to stop expressing anger and to recognize that the war is ongoing. In response, Romania ordered the closure of the Russian consulate in Constanța, marking the first time a UAV directly attacked a Romanian residential building since the conflict began in 2022.
