Russian airstrikes damage Kyiv’s UNESCO‑listed Pechersk Lavra monastery
Russian air raids on Kyiv on 15 June damaged the UNESCO World Heritage site Kyiv‑Pechersk Lavra, including the Cathedral of the Assumption. The attacks caused at least five deaths among emergency responders, injured five more, and left 18 civilians wounded while cutting electricity for about 140,000 residents.
UNESCO issued a condemnation, stating the strike harmed the historic monastic complex and surrounding structures such as the fortified Lavra walls and the Ivan Kushnik Tower. The organization emphasized that attacks on cultural heritage, education and media personnel violate international law and pledged assistance to assess the damage and support protective measures.
