Russian athletes return to international sports competitions

Following the International Olympic Committee's decision in July to temporarily lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, Russian athletes and officials are increasingly returning to international sports competitions.

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has confirmed that Russian athletes and referees will be permitted to participate in competitions under its auspices. This follows a trend seen in other disciplines; for instance, World Taekwondo previously allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flags and has recently lifted restrictions regarding the hosting of international events within Russia.

The reintegration of Russian competitors has drawn significant criticism from various sports figures and experts, particularly due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, some individuals, such as former volleyball player Zbigniew Bartman, have defended the move, arguing that it maintains the competitive level of international sports and questioning the consistency of sanctions applied to different nations involved in conflicts.
