Russian reintegration into international sports

Overview

Following a July decision by the International Olympic Committee to temporarily lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, Russian athletes and officials have begun returning to international competitions.

The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) confirmed that Russian athletes and referees will be permitted to participate in its competitions. This follows similar actions by World Taekwondo, which allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their national flags and lifted restrictions on hosting international events within Russia. While the reintegration has faced criticism due to the conflict in Ukraine, some figures have defended the move as a means to maintain competitive levels.

By October, Russian Minister of Sport Mikhail Degtyarev announced that the nation is effectively reintegrated into the Olympic movement. He stated that the Russian Olympic Committee has been restored and expressed intentions for Russia to compete using its national flag and anthem at upcoming events, such as the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar and the European Games in Istanbul. Additionally, Russia is reportedly preparing for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics through diplomatic and legal channels.
