Russian Athletics Federation files new CAS claim against World Athletics

The Russian Athletics Federation has filed a new claim with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge sanctions imposed by World Athletics. This follows the initial exclusion of Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competitions in March 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine.

The new legal action specifically targets restrictions placed on the federation itself. Russian officials argue that these measures are “unprecedented” and “selective and politicized,” claiming they infringe upon the organization’s rights and prevent it from fully representing the interests of Russian athletes. Boris Yaryshevskiy, the federation's executive director, stated that the sanctions hinder normal operations and impede the development of the sport, particularly among young athletes.

World Athletics has maintained its position, stating it will “energetically defend” its stance. While the International Olympic Committee has recommended easing restrictions for certain events, World Athletics has upheld the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes from its sanctioned competitions.
