World Athletics and Russian Athletics CAS dispute

Overview

The Russian Athletics Federation has filed a claim with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge sanctions imposed by World Athletics. These restrictions, which originally excluded Russian and Belarusian athletes from international competition in March 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine, are now being specifically contested regarding the federation itself.

Russian officials have characterized the measures as “unprecedented” and “selective and politicized,” arguing they prevent the federation from representing the interests of its athletes and hinder the development of the sport.

In response, World Athletics President Sebastian Coe has pledged to “energetically defend” the organization’s position at CAS. While the International Olympic Committee has suggested easing restrictions for certain events and other governing bodies have eased bans, World Athletics has maintained its suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes from its sanctioned competitions.
