Russian attacks on Ukrainian religious sites draw international condemnation

The German government condemned a wave of Russian air strikes that set fire to Kyiv’s UNESCO‑listed cave monastery, with spokesperson Sebastian Hille saying “Die Angriffe auf das Kloster verurteilen wir auf das Schärfste” and stressing Russia’s lack of willingness to move toward peace. UNESCO also denounced the damage to the historic site, warning of severe loss to cultural heritage. Russia, however, blamed a U.S. Patriot air‑defence missile for the blaze.

Separately, reports indicate that Russian forces have systematically bombed Ukrainian churches, with more than 600 places of worship damaged or destroyed and over 50 clergy killed since 2022. A U.S. legislative proposal, the “Countering Russia’s War on Faith Act,” seeks sanctions against those responsible. Russian officials deny intentional attacks on civilians or religious buildings. The combined incidents have drawn sharp criticism from German officials, Moldovan President Maia Sandu, and international bodies, reinforcing calls for continued support to Ukraine and sustained pressure on Russia.
