Russian bombers intercepted by Swedish jets over the Baltic near Gotland

Russian bombers were detected over the Baltic Sea on Monday, with Swedish air-defense fighters dispatched to intercept. Two Jas 39 Gripen jets were ordered to meet the intruding aircraft and monitored their movements as they were tracked northeast of Gotland and along the island, according to the Swedish Air Force’s operations chief, Lt. Col. Robert Krznaric: “We identified the aircraft northeast of Gotland and followed them along the island.”

The reports from Swedish defense officials indicate a coordinated intercept in response to the Russian bombers’ activity over international airspace near Swedish territory. The episodes were described similarly by Swedish media, highlighting the engagement by Gripen fighters in monitoring and accompanying the Russian aircraft during the Baltic passage.
