Sweden expands military and civil‑defence capabilities amid rising Russian activity

Overview

In early April 2026 Swedish air and naval units began tracking a Russian submarine moving through Kattegatt toward the Baltic Sea, followed a week later by the interception of Russian bombers over the Baltic near Gotland. In response, Sweden launched its first sovereign military satellite in early May to surveil Russian territory and the wider Baltic/Arctic region.
