Russian Doppelganger disinformation campaigns target European unity

Russian-backed disinformation campaigns, specifically the “Doppelganger” operation, have been identified as a significant threat to European democratic resilience and unity. These operations utilize sophisticated digital tactics, such as creating fake websites that mimic the branding, appearance, and writing styles of legitimate news outlets and official institutions like NATO, Le Parisien, Die Welt, and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

By presenting false or misleading stories under the guise of credible journalism, these campaigns aim to exploit existing societal divisions. Key themes targeted include economic insecurity, immigration, national sovereignty, and debates regarding military assistance to Ukraine. These narratives often overlap with messaging from far-right and Eurosceptic parties, effectively amplifying existing grievances to make them appear more widespread and urgent.

The strategic goal of these campaigns is to deepen domestic divisions within European member states, thereby making Western cooperation more difficult and politically costly.
