Russian disinformation campaigns in Europe

Russian-backed disinformation efforts have been identified as a significant threat to European democratic resilience. Initial reports highlighted the “Doppelganger” operation, which uses sophisticated digital tactics to create fake websites mimicking legitimate news outlets and official institutions, such as NATO and various national ministries. These campaigns aim to exploit societal divisions regarding immigration, economic insecurity, and military aid to Ukraine to undermine Western cooperation.

As the situation progressed, Swedish authorities warned of the increased use of bot networks to target upcoming elections in major democracies, specifically identifying Germany and France as priority targets. These efforts seek to polarize societies and sow doubt about support for Ukraine by spreading narratives concerning corruption in Kyiv. While Sweden has faced similar campaigns previously, officials noted that current efforts appear focused on strengthening far-right parties in other European nations. Swedish officials also criticized social media platforms for failing to sufficiently dismantle these automated influence networks.
