Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra strike kills 11, damages UNESCO heritage complex

A Russian drone and missile barrage on 15 June 2026 hit Kyiv, killing 11 people and wounding dozens. The attack set fire to the roof of the Dormition Cathedral inside the Kyiv‑Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and damaged five protected heritage locations, including the Museum of Book Printing, the Museum of Historical Treasures, the 17th‑century Kushchnyk Tower and parts of the Mystetskyi Arsenal complex. Firefighters contained the blaze before it reached the interior iconostasis, and historic artifacts dating to the 16th‑18th centuries were evacuated.

Ukrainian officials reported fragments of Shahed‑type drones at the site, rejecting Russian claims that a Ukrainian air‑defence missile caused the damage. UNESCO has placed the site on its World Heritage in Danger list and sent experts to assess the damage. Greece pledged financial and technical assistance for restoration, while Ukrainian authorities warned that fabricated AI‑generated images of the strike were being circulated as “false‑flag” evidence.

Metropolitan Epiphanius condemned the assault as “another Russian crime against humanity, against history, against Christianity.” The incident underscores the war’s impact on cultural heritage and has prompted international calls for accountability.
