Russian drone hits building in Galati, Romania, prompting Italian PM Meloni warning

A Russian drone struck a residential building in Galati, Romania, injuring two people. The European Union and NATO condemned the violation of Romanian airspace.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the incident as "a gravissimo act that endangers European security" and expressed solidarity with Romania, calling it an "act of aggression that spares no one". Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and Defence Minister Guido Crosetto also condemned the attack, warning of a dangerous escalation.

Meloni has not yet decided whether to attend the EU‑5 summit scheduled for 2 June in Berlin, which coincides with Italy’s Republic Day celebrations. The Italian government may request an alternative date. The summit, involving Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Poland, will address the war in Ukraine and the prospect of Ukraine’s EU accession. A separate EU‑Balkans summit is set for 5 June in Tivat, Montenegro.

Some political figures, including a far‑right commentator, have suggested the drone could be Ukrainian, but officials stress that technical analysis is required to determine its origin.
