Russian House in Berlin faces espionage allegations
The Russian House of Science and Culture in Berlin has become a focal point of political controversy following allegations from the French Ministry of the Interior that the institute serves as a cover for Russian intelligence operations. Critics, including Green Party MP Robin Wagener, have characterized the facility as an instrument of Russian information warfare and propaganda.
Adding to the security concerns, an office of the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport moved into an adjacent building on July 1. The new location houses departments responsible for critical areas such as the security and resilience of public telecommunications networks. CDU Member of Parliament Roderich Kiesewetter criticized the decision, citing a lack of risk awareness regarding the proximity to a suspected security risk.
Operated by the state agency Rossotrudnichestvo, which is under EU sanctions due to the war in Ukraine, the Russian House does not hold diplomatic immunity. Consequently, its financial accounts are currently subject to supervision by the Bundesbank.
