Sergey Naryshkin warns of real risk of large-scale Eurasian conflict
Sergey Naryshkin, Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), warned that the risk of a large-scale conflict across Eurasia is real. Speaking at the 22nd Conference of Heads of Security and Intelligence Agencies of the CIS member states in Saint Petersburg, Naryshkin expressed deep concern regarding the deteriorating security environment.
Naryshkin accused European elites of supporting the Ukrainian government while simultaneously obstructing peaceful attempts to resolve the conflict. He alleged that NATO is interested in prolonging the war to deplete Russia's military and mobilization potential. Citing European intelligence projections, he claimed Ukraine's mobilization capacity could be exhausted within a year.
Furthermore, the SVR chief suggested that Western leaders are pursuing a strategy of 'controlled escalation' or 'balancing on the edge of the abyss,' a doctrine he attributed to Cold War-era intelligence strategies. He also noted that European political and economic groups may be using the narrative of an Eastern threat to justify increased military spending and industrial adaptation.
