Russian military faces severe personnel shortages amid high casualties

Reports from the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine indicate significant personnel challenges for the Russian military. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Russian casualties—including both killed and wounded—are estimated to have reached 1.4 million people.

Due to these heavy losses, there are reports that Russian commanders are deploying wounded and disabled soldiers to the front lines. Former officer Mykola Melnyk suggests these soldiers are sometimes used as ‘bait’ to draw Ukrainian drone fire and identify defensive positions before more capable infantry are sent in.

Additionally, some prisoners of war held in Ukraine are Ukrainian citizens who chose to fight on the Russian side. These individuals, including those from the Donbas region, have reported high mortality rates among their peers despite financial incentives for recruitment. As the conflict continues, reports suggest it is becoming increasingly difficult to find new recruits to replace those lost in combat.
