Russian missile and drone strike on Kyiv kills 17, injures 44

Russia launched a massive overnight barrage of 115 drones and 28 missiles, including 24 ballistic missiles, against Kyiv and its surrounding region on 5 August 2026. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 98 of the drones but failed to shoot down any of the missiles, resulting in 17 deaths and 44 injuries.

The strikes hit civilian infrastructure such as a brewery, a construction‑material warehouse, a mail‑sorting office, a railway station and other storage facilities. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the lack of ballistic‑missile interceptors contributed to the casualties and urged partners to accelerate deliveries. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the targets were transport, logistics and distribution centres and said its forces downed 475 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory.

The attack underscores Ukraine’s critical shortage of air‑defence munitions and the ongoing pressure on Western suppliers amid the broader conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
