Russian missile strike damages Kyiv's UNESCO Pechersk Lavra, kills four

A Russian ballistic missile hit Kyiv on the night of 14 June 2026, igniting a fire at the Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage monastery. The blaze damaged the roof of the Dormition Cathedral and caused extensive destruction to surrounding residential buildings, a market and a food shop.

Ukrainian authorities reported at least four civilians killed and 23 injured, among them a pregnant woman and a child. In Kharkiv, further Russian shelling killed five volunteer rescuers who were responding to earlier fires and wounded at least five more people. The strikes also damaged power lines in northern Kyiv, leaving about 140,000 residents without electricity. A separate drone attack on Sumy injured three civilians, including a child.
