Russia's strike on Kyiv's Dormition Cathedral kills 11, sparks UNESCO condemnation

On the night of 15 June 2026, Russian forces launched a massive missile and drone attack on Ukraine, targeting Kyiv, Kharkiv and the Dnipropetrovsk region. The bombardment killed at least 11 people – five in Kyiv, five rescuers in Kharkiv and one civilian in Kherson – and wounded dozens, including two children.

A major part of the strike set fire to the Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage site dating from the 11th century. The cathedral’s roof was badly damaged, with flames covering around 800 m². Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, said the attack was a deliberate drone strike and called it “one of the gravest crimes against Christian culture.” UNESCO condemned the damage, stating the attack “caused significant harm to the exterior and interior of the cathedral.”

Russia described the operation as a “massive bombing” of military-industrial facilities and denied targeting the monastery, attributing the fire to a “decommissioned” Patriot air‑defence missile. Ukrainian air‑defence reported intercepting 50 of 70 missiles and 582 of 611 drones, while also launching retaliatory drone strikes that killed three people in the Russian city of Tula. Zelensky appealed to the G7 summit for a decisive response and greater anti‑missile support.
