Russian missile and drone strikes cause dozens of deaths and injuries in Ukrainian cities

On 11–12 July 2026 Russia launched a coordinated wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine. The strikes hit major urban centres including Kyiv, Sumy, Odessa, Kharkiv, Chernihiv and Kherson, employing over 120 drones and at least 12 missiles, half of which were ballistic. Civilian targets were hit: residential areas, bus stations, ports and industrial facilities. Casualties varied by report but total deaths were at least eight to ten people, with dozens more injured, including children and a 13‑year‑old girl in Sumy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said none of the ballistic missiles were intercepted and repeatedly urged Western allies to accelerate delivery of air‑defence systems, particularly Patriot‑type interceptors.

Medical workers have also been targeted. Médecins Sans Frontières warned that Russian drones are using a “double‑attack” tactic, first striking civilians and then hitting the emergency responders who arrive, raising the risk to medics and raising concerns of violations of international humanitarian law.

The Russian Ministry of Defence reported precision strikes on Ukraine’s military‑industrial complex and energy infrastructure, including sub‑stations in Sumy and Chernihiv. Ukrainian defence officials said they shot down most drones and cruise missiles but a significant number of ballistic missiles got through, underscoring the ongoing challenge for the country’s air‑defence network.
