Russian war bloggers criticize military leadership over Lyman setbacks
Russian ultranationalist war bloggers are increasingly criticizing the country’s military leadership, accusing commanders of sabotaging war efforts through a “culture of lies.” These commentators, who typically support the invasion, have targeted high-ranking officers for recent setbacks in the Lyman sector of the eastern Donbas.
The criticism follows the Ukrainian 3rd Army Corps’ successful execution of “Operation Vivaldi.” According to Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi, the counteroffensive resulted in the liberation of several areas north of Lyman, including Nove, Ridkodub, Katerynivka, Karpivka, and Novomykhailivka. The operation reportedly resulted in approximately 2,000 Russian soldiers being killed or wounded and over 250 taken prisoner.
War bloggers have specifically denounced the practice of “beautiful reports,” a term used to describe exaggerated or false combat reports that commanders pass up the chain of command to mask operational failures.
