Russia's aircraft and drone incursions confront NATO forces in the North Atlantic and Europe

British defense officials said a Russian Bear‑F maritime patrol aircraft repeatedly approached the HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier group in the Norwegian Sea off Iceland, flying at low altitude and dropping sonobuoys. Two UK F‑35 jets were dispatched to intercept and escort the plane until it withdrew, with the ministry describing the activity as unsafe and unprofessional.

A separate analysis by the International Institute for Strategic Studies linked a Russian‑linked commercial “shadow fleet” to a series of drone flights over Europe between August 2024 and February 2026. The drones were observed over a dozen NATO member states and Ireland, targeting military bases (48 %), critical infrastructure such as ports and energy facilities (26 %), and civilian airports (18 %). The only incident directly attributed to Russia involved a drone launched from the signals‑intelligence vessel Zhigulevsk that was jammed by Swedish forces in February 2026. The pattern suggests a Kremlin effort to probe allied air‑defence systems and normalize low‑level airspace violations.

Both events highlight rising Russian aerial activity around NATO assets in the North Atlantic and across Europe.
