Russia's Drone Strike on Romania Heightens European Security Tensions

Russia’s ongoing war with Ukraine escalated after a drone strike hit Romanian territory, prompting European leaders to warn of broader security risks. France’s minister for European Affairs said Moscow aims to “threaten the whole European security architecture.”

Officials cited the incident as evidence that Russia could attempt to test NATO cohesion by targeting Baltic states, Swedish or Danish islands in the Baltic Sea, or other Arctic alliance territories. In response, the United Kingdom and Poland have signed a new defence agreement, adding to a growing list of bilateral security pacts prompted by the war. France is also seeking cooperation with Germany and the UK to develop long‑range missiles, while a fighter‑jet partnership involving Britain, Italy and Japan may expand to include further nations.
