Russia's battlefield losses surge, prompting Kremlin to recruit university students

Recent analyses by the Center for Strategic and International Studies estimate that Russia has suffered around 1.4 million military casualties since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, including roughly 450 000 deaths. These losses exceed the total American combat deaths in all wars since 1945 and are described as unprecedented since World War II.

With recruitment unable to keep pace – Ukraine’s expanding drone attacks have raised the loss‑per‑square‑kilometre ratio to more than 19 times the level a year earlier – the Kremlin has begun a targeted campaign at universities, polytechnics and vocational schools. Students are offered one‑year contracts in newly created drone units, cash bonuses of about $57 000 and promises of comparatively safe, technical roles away from the front line. Media reports cite recruitment events at dozens to hundreds of institutions.

The stark casualty figures and the shift toward pulling in academically trained volunteers underscore the strain on Russia’s armed forces and could influence the conduct of the war in Ukraine.
