Time-Restricted Eating Boosts Cognitive Performance in Older Women

A small pilot trial involving 47 women aged 50 to 79 with overweight or obesity examined the effect of meal timing on cognition. Participants reduced daily calories by 500 kcal and were assigned either a time‑restricted eating schedule—consuming all food within an average 8.2‑hour window (typically 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.)—or a control schedule spreading intake over about 12.3 hours. Both groups lost roughly 7 kg (15 lb) over six months.

Women on the restricted schedule showed greater improvement on tests of spatial planning and problem‑solving, and made fewer errors on memory and learning tasks, while no significant differences emerged in reaction‑time or multitasking assessments. The findings were presented at the Nutrition 2026 meeting in National Harbor, Maryland, and were led by Dr. Sue Shapses of Rutgers University. Independent commentary from Prof. Wendy Hall of King’s College London urged caution, noting the modest sample size and the need for peer‑reviewed publication before drawing firm conclusions.

The study adds to emerging research on intermittent fasting, suggesting that limiting daily eating windows may offer modest cognitive benefits beyond weight loss for older women, though larger trials are required to confirm these effects.
