Rwanda defeats Liberia 3-1 in AFCON 2027 qualifier

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign has commenced, with Rwanda securing a 3-1 victory over Liberia in their Group K opener at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali. Rwanda took an early lead through Abeddy Biramahire and a goal from Leroy-Jacques Mickels, before Joy-Lance Mickels converted a penalty to extend the lead. Liberia’s Sylvanus Nimely scored to briefly narrow the gap, but the Lone Star was reduced to ten men in the 60th minute following a straight red card for Kpah Sean Sherman.

In other Group K action, Mali defeated Cape Verde 3-1. In Group B, Malawi took the top spot following a 2-1 win against South Sudan, while Egypt and Angola played to a goalless draw.

Other notable results and preparations include Sudan intensifying training in Saudi Arabia ahead of matches against Ethiopia and Mozambique. The 2027 tournament is scheduled to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
