AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign

Overview

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign began with Rwanda securing a 3-1 victory over Liberia in a Group K match at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.

Rwanda established an early lead through Abeddy Biramahire in the 2nd minute and Leroy-Jacques Mickels in the 33rd minute. Liberia’s Sylvanus Nimely scored in the 38th minute to briefly narrow the gap, but Rwanda extended their advantage before the interval when Joy-Lance Mickels converted a penalty. Liberia was subsequently reduced to ten men in the 61st minute following a red card for Kpah Sherman.

Following the loss to Rwanda, Liberia suffered a second consecutive defeat, losing 1-0 to Mali at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex. Sports Minister Cornelia Kruah noted on social media that while the result was not desired, the performance against Mali was “better than the last.” Liberia remains with zero points after two of its six scheduled group matches, leaving four matches remaining in the campaign.
