Rwandan chili exporters target EU and UK winter markets
Rwandan exporters are leveraging a favorable winter season to supply chili peppers and green beans to the European Union and United Kingdom markets. At the Fruit Attraction trade fair, the Rwandan pavilion featured an all-female lineup of exhibitors as part of the ‘Value-added Initiative to Boost Employment’. This program is a collaborative effort involving the International Trade Centre (ITC), TradeMark Africa, the Mastercard Foundation, and the Private Sector Federation – Specialized Cluster.
Despite high demand and a strong reputation for Rwandan produce in the British market, exporters face significant logistical hurdles. As a landlocked nation, products must cross two borders to reach the port of Mombasa for sea freight. Challenges include a lack of local refrigerated containers, rising trucking costs, and growing resistance to air freight within European retail sectors. Additionally, sea shipping remains vulnerable to disruptions in the Red Sea.
