African chili export sector development

Overview

Agricultural sectors in Malawi and Rwanda are focusing on expanding chili exports to meet international demand, though both regions face distinct structural challenges.

In Malawi, experts highlight significant potential for increasing foreign exchange through scaled production and value addition. Current efforts focus on raising average yields from 200 kilograms per hectare through improved extension services. However, production remains too fragmented for smallholders to meet the minimum 10-metric-tonne volumes required by traders, leading to calls for better market linkages and price coordination.

In Rwanda, exporters are targeting winter markets in the European Union and United Kingdom. Through initiatives like the ‘Value-added Initiative to Boost Employment’, which features female exhibitors, the country is leveraging its reputation for quality produce. Despite this, Rwandan exporters face logistical hurdles due to the nation’s landlocked status, including high trucking costs, a lack of refrigerated containers, and maritime shipping vulnerabilities in the Red Sea.
