Germany arrests suspect for power grid sabotage
A 48-year-old man, identified as Daniel V., has been arrested in connection with a series of sabotage attacks targeting the German power grid. The suspect was apprehended near the Weisweiler power plant in North Rhine-Westphalia after a large-scale manhunt involving approximately 1,700 police officers.
Investigations reveal that the suspect used self-made rockets and launching devices to shoot conductive wires over high-voltage lines, causing short circuits in several federal states, including North Rhine-Westphalia, Brandenburg, and Saxony. These actions led to temporary disruptions at power plants, such as the Bergheim-Rheidt and Turnow-Preilack facilities, though no widespread blackouts affecting the general population were reported.
Authorities discovered a notebook in the suspect's motorhome containing handwritten notes detailing more than 160 potential and previous sabotage targets. Additionally, police found over 40 launching devices in North Rhine-Westphalia and 21 more in Saxony. The suspect's alleged motive is a protest against electricity generation from fossil fuels.
Due to the severity and potential constitutional implications of the acts, the German Federal Prosecutor's Office has taken over the investigation. The suspect is currently in custody, facing charges including causing explosions, disrupting public utilities, and destroying essential equipment.
